Foreword: Moving at full speed with a “renewed GeSI”
Dear Reader

The GeSI Board and General Assembly meetings held in Brussels last July set the direction for the NEW GeSI Association. Conscious of the extraordinary revolution and transformational change that Digital technologies are going underway and the impact of these in every single industry, enlarging therefore the scope and definition of the Digital Industry sector, the GeSI Board and General Assembly took the bold step of opening up GeSI to deepen the collaborations with other industries, such as utilities, logistics, mobility, health, education, agriculture, just to mention a few.

Digital will be at the centre of GeSI as Digital is the World Economy driving force. And Sustainability along with Digital remains GeSI's second driver: DIGITAL and SUSTAINABILITY will be at the centre of the new organisation and will drive our future positive and transformative agenda, focusing our strategy on deploying digital innovative and enabling solutions.

We have built a modern and forward-looking industry association to better serve our members and better respond to the world's most pressing challenges. As we approach the summer holiday period, I invite all of you to take a moment to reflect on the progress that we have made together and to continue to utilise the power of digital technologies for a sustainable future.

In the face of global challenges, digital technologies are powerful tools to achieve the 2030 agenda. In July, GeSI launched the Scope 3 Guidance for Telecommunications Operators that GeSI has been working on for the past two years with GSMA and ITU. We thank all our members for their support throughout this process and their enthusiasm at the workshop.

We are also in full preparation for the to be held in Lisbon from 27-29 September, where we are looking forward to welcoming you to the exciting agenda that we have planned.

I once again express my gratitude to you all for your unwavering support for GeSI and our events.

I wish you a pleasant reading experience.

Kind regards
Luis Neves
CEO of GeSI

GeSI would like to thank everyone who joined us on July 11 for the Workshop on Scope 3 accounting for Telecom operators, jointly organised with GSMA and ITU. We are also particularly thankful to all GeSI Members who contributed to this guidance over the past 2 years.

This event provided a high-level overview of the newly released guidance on Scope 3 Guidance for telecommunication operators. This Guidance harmonizes methods for telecommunication operators to allocate, calculate and report their scope 3 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, to improve accuracy, coverage and transparency.

This event, to be hosted at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, sets up the scene for the upcoming discussions around the Biodiversity Programme at the Summit.

Tropical forests are the planet’s biologically richest ecosystems. They also provide a diversity of natural products and critical ecosystem services, such as reducing floods, storing forest carbon, and helping to stabilize regional and global climates. Unfortunately, tropical forests are being imperiled by many human activities. The greatest direct driver of tropical forest disruption is commercial agriculture, followed by timber and mining industries, fossil-fuel extraction, small-scale farming, road and infrastructure expansion, and novel pathogens. Climate change is also becoming an increasingly potent and varied driver of change in the tropics. At regional scales, tropical forests and wildlife in Asia, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania all face differing combinations of environmental threats. Given current trends, many tropical species will become vulnerable to synergisms that can occur when they are affected, often fatally, by combinations of different environmental drivers. Amid all these concerns, there is also good news for tropical forests, providing a ray of hope for the future.

CSCP are bridging the gap between European Consumers and Sustainability

The Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP) is trying to bridge the gap as European consumers' willingness to eat healthier and sustainable food has increased but the consumption patterns show a lag in the consumption of sustainable foods. Studies from the Valumics project prove that European consumers food choices behaviors are driven by factors such as food safety, price, health, habit, culture, and other product quality attributes. Attributes that promote sustainability are present but do not rank high in consumers’ list of priorities. Given this evidence the question remains: how can we create behavioral change in the consumption of sustainable food? The CSCP has published four reports focusing on the behaviors of food consumption, solutions, Behaviour change Interventions for more sustainable food consumption, and turning intention into action.

NTT succeeds at Frequency Stabilization of an Electro-Optic Modulation-Based Optical Frequency Comb

NTT in collaboration with Tokyo Denki University have successfully further stabilised the graduate frequency of an optical frequency ruler generated by modulating the intensity and phase of laser light in an electrical signal. This research will help the development of high speed and large capacity optical communication as well as next generation digital coherent transmission. The research group augmented the conventional method of frequency stabilisation by using short highly nonlinear fiber and seven (in comparison to one) phase modulators.

NEC demonstrates advantages of distributed-MIMO in ultra-high-density user environments

NEC has conducted evaluations and tests for their Multiple Input Multiple Input (MIMO) technique that enables simultaneous multiple radio communications connections using a large number of transceivers. MIMO will allow high-capacity transmissions in high density user areas such as a concert or a populous urban area. NEC has also conducted tests on Distributed-MIMO, a strategic approach to distributing a large number of antennas rather than concentrating them in a single array as well as Collocated MIMO, an approach where the antenna and transceivers are arranged with half wavelength intervals.
